Are there still any Convair 880s and 990s still flying in cargo service in the US?

It was the dark of the moon on the 6th of June and a Kenworth pullin' logs,Cab-over Pete wit a reefer on and a Jimmy haulin hogs..........

Certainly no 990's. There is only 1 in supposedly flyable condition (and up for sale)anywhere in the world.

Doubtful that any 880's are still in operation either. Too noisy (stage 3 regs)and far too thirsty.

With large numbers of newer, 2nd generation jets sitting in mothballs and up for sale at bargain basement prices, no cargo operator would want a thirsty 880.

Been a long time since either an 880 or 990 last flew. At least 10 years would be my guess.

There are restoration projects under way for both types, although as you may imagine, it's going to be a long haul.

Aren't the 990s about as thirsty as the 880?

I once flew on an AA 990, when I was a kid. I remember looking out the window at the speed pods. I think I recall the pilot announcing that we would cruise at 600 mph.

There is a beautiful static Swissair 990 in Lucerne, Switzerland, in the Museum of Transport. It is allowed to go inside. The aircraft is in excellent condition!

NASA is the owner of a 990 stored somewere in the desert in flyable conditions.
It was last used for space shuttle landing gear test and is extensively modificated.NASA website display some very good shots of the test.

At Mojave airport entrance is one of only a handful of surviving Convair 990 Coronados. This aircraft last flew with a NASA program that tested the Space Shuttle's wheel and brake system. The Airport also owns another CV-990, which is available for film production use.

None flying. They won't meet noise regs and there is no hush kit mod. There is a VERY complete 990 that was recently on eBay. It didnt meet its reserve price. You could buy it for well under $100,000, but couldn't fly it regularly in the US so it's likely to become a ground exhibit or beer cans, depending on whether a buyer is found. Beautiful aircraft.

There was a CV880 displayed outside Lisbon airport when I visited there in Sept 1997-definitely a non-flyer tho.

Probably the most visible CV-880 is the one owned by Elvis Pressley and on display at his home in Memphis, TN. It can be seen from the street, which is coincidently, Elvis Pressley Blvd.

It's in reasonable shape, considering its been outside for a long time. Saw it early this month, and will post some photos soon.
